Introduction:"Amazon planned to launch new sites in Chile, Colombia, Nigeria, and South Africa markets in early 2023. However, it has not launched in any of the new markets now."

"Amazon planned to launch new sites in Chile, Colombia, Nigeria, and South Africa markets in early 2023. However, it has not launched in any of the new markets now.

According to documents obtained by Insider's Eugene Kim in 2021, Amazon planned to launch new sites in Colombia in February 2023 and in Chile in April 2023 as part of the 'Santos' project. The 'Fela' project in South Africa was expected to launch in February 2023, and Nigeria was planned for April 2023.

Amazon has launched products in ten markets and has consistently launched at least one new market site every year for the past six years. Based on the current situation, 2023 might be the first skipped year. Belgium was the last new market site launched by Amazon in October 2022.

According to available information, Amazon plans to launch a new project in South Africa in early 2024. Amazon has already started recruiting sellers in this market, while other countries may have been suspended. The Daily Investor reported, 'Industry sources closely associated with Amazon's operations in South Africa indicate that Amazon is still proceeding with the launch of the South African market project but has suspended the launch of the Nigerian project.

Amazon Market Map for 2023

Brazil, Mexico, and Australia are Amazon's fastest-growing international markets. Over the past three years, website traffic has nearly doubled in Brazil and increased by more than 1.5 times in both Mexico and Australia. Amazon entered the Mexican market in 2015 and expanded into Brazil and Australia in 2017. Later, in 2018, it entered the Turkish market, also experiencing robust growth.

As Amazon ventures into increasingly smaller and more competitive markets, the eight markets entered from 2019 to 2022 represent a relatively smaller portion, accounting for only 2% of Amazon's total website traffic.

Amazon's global expansion is highly cautious as it requires substantial fixed investments - Amazon needs to provide Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) support when launching new markets. While Amazon can leverage existing infrastructure (and seller resources) to launch some new market projects, countries like South Africa or Chile require starting from scratch. In contrast, TEMU was able to rapidly launch in 48 countries this year because it doesn't require local entity infrastructure.

Amazon's international footprint is a long-term bet, spanning established markets like the UK and Germany, massive markets like India, and a range of emerging markets. If markets like Chile, Colombia, Nigeria, and South Africa eventually go live, Amazon will become a retailer in 25 of the world's top 50 economies.
