1. FedEx Changes Additional Surcharges
On December 18, FedEx announced that it will introduce new surcharges and adjust some existing ones next month. Regarding additional service charges, starting from January 13, 2025, all international packages meeting the "Additional Service - Size" criteria will be billed at a minimum weight of 18 kg (or 40 lbs). Other criteria for determining the applicability of additional service fees remain unchanged.

2. UPS Increases SurePost Service Rates
On December 18, UPS announced that starting January 13, 2025, it will increase the rates for SurePost services and delivery area surcharges. The increase varies depending on package weight and shipping distance. For example, the basic rate for a 1 lb package in Zone 2 will increase by nearly 10%, while a 25 lb package in Zone 8 will rise by about 6.7%, surpassing last year’s increase of 5.9%. The demand for SurePost, a cost-effective shipping method, has led to growth in UPS's ground residential freight volume. However, USPS will no longer offer contract rate discounts for delivery units and plans to increase Parcel Select freight rates, which may reduce UPS's reliance on USPS for SurePost deliveries. UPS is also improving its "near-distance matching algorithm" to lower delivery costs and plans to gradually increase the proportion of SurePost deliveries over the next few years, aiming for 50% by 2028.
