Introduction:From Full-Managed to Semi-Managed: The Increasing Capital Threshold for Cross-Border E-Commerce Sellers

Over the past two years, the full-managed model has brought significant changes to the cross-border e-commerce industry. With its low entry threshold, it attracted a large number of industry factories and domestic traders without foreign trade or e-commerce experience, significantly enriching the range of cross-border e-commerce products and greatly increasing the number of industry practitioners, thus promoting the growth of the entire industry.

However, as the full-managed model developed rapidly, the bottleneck in air cargo capacity became a key constraint on its growth. Against this backdrop, e-commerce platforms have shifted their focus to the semi-managed model of sea freight and overseas warehouses. From the outset, the semi-managed model has been more suitable for experienced sellers with certain e-commerce and foreign trade experience. This has led to a clear distinction between the participants in the full-managed and semi-managed models.

Looking back five years, among the cross-border e-commerce participants, except for Amazon sellers who mostly chose the overseas warehouse stocking model, sellers on other platforms generally adopted the domestic direct shipping small parcel model for their cross-border e-commerce businesses.

Today, limited air cargo capacity is occupied by the large volumes of goods from full-managed model platforms, and the future growth of the industry is primarily reliant on the sea freight + overseas warehouse semi-managed model. This means that the growth space for cross-border e-commerce sellers will also need to shift to the overseas warehouse stocking model. For sellers accustomed to the direct-shipping logistics model, the semi-managed overseas warehouse stocking model imposes higher requirements on their overseas stocking capacity, cash flow efficiency, and supply chain management capabilities, thus raising the capital threshold for sellers.

Overall, the cross-border e-commerce industry is at a critical juncture of model transformation. Sellers need to adapt to this change and enhance their capabilities to seize development opportunities in the new model. E-commerce platforms also need to continuously optimize their models to promote the sustainable and healthy development of the industry.
