1. Amazon Ranked First in GMV in the First Half of the Year


On September 6, according to public data compiled by Cross-Border Research, Amazon's Gross Merchandise Volume (GMV) for the first half of 2024 reached $350 billion, leading Shopify's $128.1 billion by a wide margin. Among China's four leading outbound e-commerce platforms, AliExpress and SHEIN both recorded GMVs of $30 billion; TEMU's GMV was $20 billion, and TikTok SHOP's GMV was $10.7 billion. The top 20 platforms in terms of GMV for the first half of 2024 include Amazon, Shopify, Walmart, Shopee, eBay, AliExpress, SHEIN, MercadoLibre, TEMU, Lazada, OZON, Wildberries, TikTok SHOP, Zalando, Trendyol, Wayfair, Etsy, Coupang, Otto, and Jumia.

2. TEMU Sparks New Price War


On September 6, Cube Asia, a market analysis company, released a report indicating that TEMU may trigger a new price war after entering the Thai market. Cube Asia's research found that branded products only account for 12% of TEMU's product selection, while a significant portion of products on established platforms come from official stores operated by brands or authorized dealers. Cube Asia notes that Southeast Asian consumers are already accustomed to low-priced Chinese goods. TEMU connects manufacturers and wholesalers, primarily in China, directly with global customers, offering lower prices than existing platforms. Sellers on other platforms should prepare for this new price competition to maintain their market share.

3. Northwest Cargo Airlines Opens New International Cargo Route


On September 6, Northwest Cargo Airlines launched a new international cargo route between Xi'an and Tashkent, using a B757-200F freighter. The flight, CO9625, will initially operate once per week, with plans to increase frequency based on market demand. The route primarily transports mechanical parts, communication equipment, electronics, and specialty agricultural products. This is the second Central Asia cargo route launched by Northwest Cargo Airlines, following the Xi'an–Almaty route, and the fourth new cargo route opened this year.

4. MSC Acquires British Logistics Company


On September 6, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) subsidiary Medlog completed the acquisition of British logistics company Maritime Group. The financial terms were not disclosed. According to the announcement, Maritime Group will continue to operate under its existing brand with the current management team, led by John Williams, remaining in place with support from Medlog's new investment.

5. China Southern Sets Record for Passenger and Cargo Volumes in Beijing


On September 6, during the 2024 summer travel season, China Southern's Beijing hub added over 680 flights to popular routes between Beijing and Xinjiang, Northwest China, and Northeast China, setting a record for both passenger and cargo volumes. In cargo operations, China Southern Logistics reported a 48% year-on-year increase in cargo and mail volumes from Beijing.

6.Newegg's First Half Revenue Reaches $618 Million


On September 6, U.S. e-commerce platform Newegg reported its financial results for the first half of 2024. As of June 30, Newegg's revenue was $618.1 million. The financial highlights for the first half of the year include:

- GMV: $746.7 million

- Gross profit: $63.1 million

- Net loss: $25 million, compared to $29.3 million for the same period last year.

7. Amazon to Have 9.7 Million Sellers


On September 6, it was reported that Amazon is expected to have 9.7 million sellers by the end of 2024, with 1.9 million active sellers. Currently, third-party sellers contribute 60% of Amazon's total sales. Amazon's product catalog includes more than 12 million items, covering books, media, wine, and various services, with the total number of products exceeding 350 million. In 2024, 839,900 new sellers have already entered the market, with an average of 3,700 new sellers joining daily. By the end of the year, the number of new sellers is expected to rise to 1.35 million.

8. Lazada Indonesia Increases Seller Management Fees


On September 6, Lazada Indonesia announced an increase in seller management fees. The fees are calculated based on product categories, with Category A fees ranging from 6.18% to 8%, Category B from 5.68% to 7.5%, Category C from 3.93% to 5.75%, and Category D from 2.43% to 4.25%. 11. CMA CGM Introduces Global Peak Season Surcharges


On September 6, French shipping group CMA CGM announced new global peak season surcharges, effective in the coming weeks. Initially, shipments from all Northern European ports to the U.S. East Coast, the U.S. Gulf, the Canadian East Coast, and the Mexican East Coast, as well as inland destinations accessible through these ports, will be subject to a surcharge of $250 per refrigerated TEU and $500 per refrigerated FEU. Additionally, from September 15, a Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) of $1,000 per unit will apply to shipments from the Indian subcontinent, the Middle East Gulf, the Red Sea, and Egypt to the U.S. East Coast and the U.S. Gulf Coast. Another PSS of $1,000 per unit will be implemented from October 1.

12. SeaLead Launches Direct Shipping Service


On September 6, SeaLead officially launched a new direct shipping service called Far East India Djibouti (FID), connecting China, India, and Djibouti. The FID service will operate once a week, westbound from Shanghai, calling at Ningbo, Nansha, Port Klang, Colombo, Nava Sheva, and Mundra, before reaching Djibouti. The eastbound route will return from Djibouti directly to Shanghai.
